Summer Work

I’m a little embarrassed to admit that it’s been over a month since my last blog. Summer has been much busier for me than I expected it to be! But on a positive note, that means I have new work to post. I also have a photo or two from portfolio day in New York City, which ended up going pretty well in spite of the fact that it rained most of the day.

with my friend Karen Hagen at portfolio day

I had the pleasure of sharing a table with Karen Hagen (www.karenhagen.com). We both work digitally and ocassionally touch on similar subject matter, but our styles are still quite different. It was interesting to hear feedback on both of our work from the same people. Anyway, it was a good day and an even better way for my time in the UArts Illustration Department to end.

Since then I’ve been working on a few different projects, mostly for bands and musicians here in Philadelphia. This has been really exciting and fun for me. Here are a few new pieces:

Personal Piece

This is a personal piece that may or may not still be in progress. I think I like the idea better than the execution. It was interesting to play around with texture, transparency, and the way the figures fit into the frame of the window, though. At least it was an interesting experiment, if nothing else.

Dean Acres Home Association Logo

This one is a bit silly…I grew up by a small lake in Fort Collins, Colorado and my dad asked me if I would design a new sticker for the boats of residents who use the lake. At first I thought it would need to be a pretty bland logo with a boat or the mountains on it since it is for the Dean Acres Home Association, but as it turned out, my dad was the one who would be choosing the image. We agreed that a pirate goose would be pretty cool since Canadian Geese are regulars at our little lake. So this silly goose sticker will be on all the boats in the neighborhood I grew up in, which is neat, if not a little ridiculous.

SGMG Record Label Logo

This piece is a logo design for a independent record label that a friend of mine is starting up. I think this job went really well. Not only am I happy with the piece, but I’m confident that it has the look and feel that my friend wanted it to have. Single Girl Married Girl doesn’t have a proper website yet, but you can check out their myspace page at: http://www.myspace.com/singlegirlmarriedgirl

show poster for the Hermit Thrushes

This piece was so much fun. I’ve been dying to start doing show posters ever since I graduated, and this one was especially exciting. My friends in the Hermit Thrushes told me I could draw anything as long as it was strange, surreal, and maybe a little unsettling. My first drawing ended up being a little too sad for their taste. I used mostly neutral grays, and the girl was closer to the maned wolf than she is in the final version. However, stretching the legs and changing the background color from gray to a warm light orange gave the poster a lighter, less dismal feel. I loved working on this and I hope I get asked to do more show posters in the future! Here are some links to the bands and the venue:

These recent pieces are really nice. I’m in love with the show poster: the scale, the composition, the palette, everything.

I found your blog! First, of all, I love the pirate goose. And I think the poster looks great. You are so talented, I’m surprised you have time to see any of us!
